The environmental factors restricting the growth of giant sequoia were studied in Giant Forest. Factors considered included edaphic restrictions, temperature, seedling ecology, and water relations. Measurements of soil-moisture stress and water-potential measurements indicate that conditions of water availability for plant growth are more favorable inside the grove than outside. The maintenance of grove boundaries is probably controlled by an interaction of moisture availability, temperature, and the tolerance of the seedling stage.
