The frequency of seritonous-coned pitch pine is highest in the New Jersey Pine Plains, an area of dwarf vegetation, and the immediately surrounding area in the Pine Barrens. There is evidence to suggest that serotinous-coned trees are homozygotes for a single gene controlling the trait. Under this assumption, gene frequency declines rapidly to zero within at least 200 miles in all directions, decreasing logarithmically as the distance from the Pine Plains increases.
