Bear movements were in response to seasonal food. In good oak mast years the home range size is smaller than in years of poor hard mast (in square kilometers, males, 36 to 119, females 6 to 13). Abundant spring fruits, summer berries, and fall hard mast are critical for the survival of the species. Limiting roads into bear range is also important.
