Post-fire recovery in the New Jersey Pine Barrens

Presents a study of first-season recovery after fire in a Pine/Oak association. Vaccinium vacillans seems to be an early successional species in the understory. Among the trees nearly all the hardwoods had been killed back to ground level and showed sprouts from the stem base and/or the roots. Most Pines were damaged but were sprouting from the base, stem and/or branches; some were completely killed but others escaped serious injury. Pinus rigida was the only woody species regenerating from seed and seems to be largely fire-dependent in this area. The theory that frequent fires maintain a perpetual disclimax in this region is discussed. It has been suggested (in the literature) that the potential climax species for the region are Quercus coccinea and Q. velutina
