The Haleakala Conservation Biology Field Station

A newly constructed field station, located at 2070 m. elevation near Haleakala National Park headquarters, is available for use by researchers interested in addressing a broad range of biological problems relevant to long-term preservation of Hawaiian ecosystems and biota. The station was funded by the MacArthur Foundation through the Hawaii Conservation Biology Initiative, a consortium of organizations active in research and management for conservation of Hawaiian biological diversity. A complex of reserves on East Maui (Haleakala National Park, Waikamoi Preserve of The Nature Conservancy, Hanawi State Natural Area Reserve, and several state forest reserves) form one of the most viable reservoirs of biological diversity in the state. The most needed research includes the status and biology of selected endemic birds, plants and invertebrates and the status, biology and control strategies for the most damaging species of alien birds, plants and invertebrates.
