Authors' Summary: "Old-growth forests in California, Oregon, and Washington cover about 10.3 million acres. Estimates were obtained for National Forests, national parks, state parks, Bureau of Land Management land, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service land, Native American land, and private ownerships. Oregon has almost half of the old-growth acres with about 5 million acres in seven different ownerships. More than 80 percent of the old-growth is on Federal land, primarily National Forests. Old-growth occupied about half of the forest area when the first comprehensive forest surveys were made in the 1930s and 1940s. Less than 20 percent of the forest area is now old-growth."
