Summary of MAPS in Shenandoah from 1993-2003 The MAPS program was operated in Shenandoah National Park as part of the Park’s Long-Term Ecological Monitoring (LTEM) program. It was expected that information from MAPS would be capable of aiding research and management efforts within the park to protect and enhance the park's avifauna and ecological integrity. Six MAPS stations were operated in Shenandoah National Park in 2003 at the same locations at which they were operated from 1993 to 2002. Since 1989, The Institute for Bird Populations has been coordinating the Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship Program, a cooperative effort among public and private agencies and individual bird banders in North America, to operate a continent-wide network of some 500 constant-effort mist-netting and banding stations.
