Results of experiments with hardwoods in Big Cypress National Preserve, south Florida, provide information for managing natural fires in the area, and for control of non-native species. Season of topping (to simulate fire damage) affected recovery of all 5 test species except for exotic melaleuca. Mortality occurred only in one of the exotic species (Schinus terebinthifolius), with 30 percent of the trees dying after being cut between June and October.
