Data on conservation area ecology, geography, sociology, and economics are presented; threats to conservation are outlined as well as ways of dealing with them; mangrove forests provide food, firewood, medicines, materials for building, cultural handicrafts, and opportunities for recreation; declines in fish and crab catches are obvious; population growth and commercialization threaten mangroves; recommends more sustainable resource harvesting, new income generating opportunities such as aquaculture be developed; also recommends involving local people in every stage of planning and implementation of conservation areas.
