Pre project, bottomfishing in American Samoa was only by handlines around 120 m or less; main aims were to improve catch and efficiency and encourage fishing at deeper depths; Western Samoa handreels were used to handle lines with a mean catch of 4.4 kg/hr; all fishing was carried out within 15 nautical miles of Tutuila.
