Numerous techniques for ordinating phytosociological data and extracting ecological relationships have been devised over the past two decades (Whittaker 1967, Orloci 1973, 1975, Whittaker & Gauch 1973). Several authors have sought to evaluate different methods using simulated coenoclines which produce samples of exactly known composition and relation to one another (Noy-Meir & Austin 1970, Swan 1970, Austin & Noy-Meir 1971, Gauch & Whittaker 1972a, 1972b, LaFrance 1972, Gauch 1973a, Whittaker & Gauch 1973). Such evaluations are complicated by the various combinations of characteristics of samples and sample sets (including within-sample diversity, between-sample diversity, noise or sampling error, and number and relative clustering of samples) that must be considered as they affect the performance of different techniques.
