Lowland bird inventory, Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park

This survey sought to achieve three objectives: (1) document at least 90% of bird species, (2) demonstrate relative abundance and distribution of species, and (3) create baseline information to develop a monitoring plan to be used by parks. Results for lowland birds in HAVO were derived from two survey methods, area search and line transect, conducted on 25 days between 14 April and 14 July 2005. Our diversity index indicates that the HAVO lowland bird assemblage is diverse, comprised of 25 species. We observed more than 80% of the bird species expected to inhabit lowland areas, and we probably observed about 90% of bird species. The evenness measure reveals that the relative abundance of species in the assemblage is distributed equitably. We documented the presence of three new species to HAVO, the yellow-billed cardinal, saffron finch and yellow-fronted canary.
