Members of the Pacific Studies Institute staff conducted an archaeological and historical reconnaissance survey of the Garapan Flood Control Study area under contract DACW84-79-C-0028 with the Army Engineer Division, Pacific Ocean, Honolulu, Hawaii. The project area consisted of a narrow corridor along the West Coast Highway through the American Memorial Park, and a proposed outlet channel through Garapan, Saipan, CNMI. As a result of the literature search and visual inspection of the project area, a single archaeological site was discovered. The site consists of a scatter of pottery identified as Marianas Plainware, and midden material that includes the bi-valve Anadara. Based on the relative chronology of plain and redware the site may be found to date from the late period of Marianas prehistory. It was not determined whether the site is an intact deposit of cultural material or one that has been disturbed by subequent natural or human modification. It is recommended that an intensive archaeological survey with subsurface testing of site number one be conducted prior to any construction activities to determine the site's eligibility for nomination to the National Register.
