National Park Service (NPS) Management Policies and recent legislation require that park managers know the condition of natural resources and monitor long-term trends in order to fulfill the NPS mission of conserving parks unimpaired. The NPS has developed an Inventory and Monitoring program to fill in knowledge gaps in baseline data about natural resources. One of the main objectives of the biological inventory phase of this program is to document the occurrence of at least 90 percent of vertebrates and vascular plants. In response to this mandate, resource managers at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks identified the vascular plant species list as deserving of attention in order to verify that the species list is accurate and current. The purpose of this project was two-fold: 1) to locate and document all vascular plant specimens collected within Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks residing in key western herbaria, and 2) to generate a checklist of the vascular flora of the two parks based on known collections.
