The effect of light on in vitro reproduction of Monoblepharis macrandra was studied in liquid shake cultures. Zoospores inoculated into a medium of 0.25% tryptone, 0.125% yeast extract, and 0.3% glucose developed into populations of small branched thalli. Cultures grown in darkness developed only gametangial thalli by the sixth day while those grown in light or in light after 72 h darkness developed only sporangial thalli by the fifth day. Sporangial development was more synchronous and more zoospores were produced in dark-grown cultures that were transferred to a dilute salts buffer and light on the fourth day than in cultures that were transferred to light only.
