Data from a study of the physical condition of white-tailed deer in the Bear Island and Raccoon Point units of Big Cypress National Preserve. The authors collected information on reproduction, and on disease, parasites, and other aspects of the medical condition of these deer. The herds are particularly important as prey for the endangered Florida panther. The concluding section summarizes study results and contrasts the condition of the two populations. While both herds had diseases or parasites of various sorts, the Bear Island group was in much better overall condition. Deer in other areas may be close to carrying capacity. About 2/3 of the report consists of data tables.
