The forage cover on California foothill ranges is often referred to as unique, or different, as compared to that on other western rangelands. It is different -- in species composition, in time of growth and utilization, and in value as livestock forage. Consequently, the objectives and the problems of range management are somewhat different, and the application of common range improvement practices must be modified to fit the conditions. This paper will include a brief description of the California foothill area -- its location, climate and present forage cover -- and some considerations in formulating management objectives on these rangelands.
