The annual inventory of the reconstructed prairie at Herbert Hoover NHS, West Branch, Iowa, was conducted from 26 July to 1 August, 2002. The prairie has been inventoried almost annually using the same methods and in virtually in the same areas since 1982. Since inventories have been made cover of prairie grasses has declined while prairie forb cover has increased. Cover of weedy perennials has decreased, especially Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense). This annual inventory will determine if past trends are continuing or changing as well as make management recommendations to increase species diversity on the prairie and decrease influence of exotic species.
