2003 marks the twentieth annual report on inventorying the reconstructed prairie at Herbert Hoover NHS, West Branch, Iowa beginning in 1982. With the exception of 1983 and 1985 the prairie has been inventoried using the same format. Originally there were 5 permanent 20 m plots expanding to 10 (1984),12 (1992) and 14 in 1994. Five walking transects with specific starting and ending points have been measured in all inventories. This is an unusually long longitudinal study of reconstructed prairie illustrating response to management and ecological factors. Prairie forb plots 1 and 2 were not sampled in 2003. This report will summarize some of the most obvious responses of the prairie to change.
