Helium isotope ratios of volcanic gases were compared between Yellowstone Park and Lassen Volcanic National Park. Because helium isotope measurements can provide evidence of deep mantle material being brought to the surface, a mid-continental hot-spot (Yellowstone) was compared to a typical continental margin, orogenic volcanic province (Lassen). Four areas were sampled within Lassen National Park: Sulphur Works, Bumpass Hell, Morgan Hot Springs-Growler Hot Springs, and Terminal Geyser. High helium isotope ratios (15 times higher atmospheric at Yellowstone) were considered to be associated with deep-mantle plumes under hot-spots, compared to lower ratios of 10 times atmosphere in Lassen probably associated in basalt glasses at the crests of mid-ocean rises.
