Pilobolus: a fungus that grows in Yellowstone

After the information about Pilobolus from a 1993 article in Yellowstone Science 1(3)1 was used as a basis for a May 2000 segment in the National Geographic Nature series “The Body Changers,” it seemed appropriate to expand upon the description of this unique fungus. Pilobolus (Figure 1) has been found throughout Yellowstone in association with a large number of animals including elk, bison, mule deer, pronghorn, moose, and bighorn sheep. It moves through the digestive tract of these and other animals and is excreted in their droppings that it subsequently helps to decompose.
