The primary significance of the Old Harbor Life-Saving Station at Cape Cod National Seashore derives from its original role as part of the U.S. Life-Saving Service. This historic structure report contains the history of the effort to save and restore the Old Harbor Life-Saving Station. The station was built in 1897-98. By the early 1970s, the Nauset Beath where the life station stood was severely eroding, and the NPS purchased the property from private individuals to assist in its preservation (1973). Four years later, the NPS moved the station to a new site at Race Point, where it was maintained and operated by the NPS as part of Cape Cod National Seashore. The use of the Old Harbor Life-Saving Station for interpretive purposes is justified by its architecture and its historical significance. Out of a total of 13 lifesaving stations that once served Cape Cod, only two remained at the time of writing. This historic structures report is meant to provide impetus and establish guidelines for repairing vandalism that had occurred to the structure and complete the restoration. It was prepared by the Building Conservation Branch of the Cultural Resources Center for Cape Cod National Seashore.
