Due to mercury (Hg) contamination, the entire Everglades watershed in southern Florida has been closed to the hunting of alligators (Alligator mississippiensis), and health advisories have been issued to curtail consumption of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Other species of fish in Florida, and more recently, shark flesh, have also been determined to be contaminated at levels above those recommended for consumption by the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services (0.5-1.5 ppm wet wt., consumption no more than once per week by healthy nonpregnant adults; >1.5 ppm, no human consumption)....
