The invasive exotic spotted knapweed (Centaurea biebersteinii) has invaded significant portions of the Grand Sable Dunes, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. In 2003 the diversity of vegetation in 1m2 quadrats along 500-600m transects through areas with and without spotted knapweed was assessed. Pitfall traps also were installed in areas with and without spotted knapweed in order to determine the diversity of ground dwelling arthropods. Areas without spotted knapweed had higher native plant diversity and lower exotic plant diversity. Insects in the families Coleoptera: Curculionidae and Hymenoptera: Formicidae were captured more often in areas with spotted knapweed. Arachnidae: Opiliones individuals and the state threatened locust species Trimerotropis huroniana (Orthoptera: Acrididae) were captured more often in areas without spotted knapweed.
