Lack of information and the recognized importance of temperate bats as key components of Northern Great Lakes ecosystems have placed bats as a high priority for biological inventories at several parks within the Great Lakes Inventory and Monitoring Network. In 2003, acoustic sampling and mist netting was conducted at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, and Grand Portage National Monument. Six of a probable seven species of bats were verified in all three parks. In 2004, further methods were developed at PIRO and APIS to monitor bat activity in habitats of concern to park managers.
