The U.S. Bureau of Land Management developed a database on the desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) in California from 1976-1985. Strip transects provided data on distribution and relative abundance. Four major population centers covering from 918-4864 km^2 were identified. Twenty-seven study sites were the source of information for estimates of absolute densities, size-age class structure, sex ratios, and mortality rates. The status and condition of tortoise habitats were evaluated by documenting major land uses and commitments, such as land ownership, and urban, agricultural, and mineral development.
