From 1976 to 1982, 635 desert tortoise carcasses were collected from 11 of 27 sites in the California desert. Of the 635 carcasses (in all age and size classes) examined, ninety-one (14.3%) showed evidence of gunshots. Although California Fish and Game has protected the desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) from shooting and other vandalism since 1961, these incidents still occur.
