In 2004, I conducted a fish inventory of Guilford Courthouse National Military Park by sampling three reaches of the two streams that occur within the park; Hunting Creek and an unnamed tributary. Reaches consisted of a 91.44-meter section in the upper portion of the unnamed tributary, a 182.88-meter in the lower portion of the unnamed tributary, and 152.4-meter section of Hunting Creek. Surveys of each reach were conducted in summer and winter 2004 with a backpack electrofishing unit. In each survey, all fish species stunned by the electrofisher were collected and identified. In summer, I measured total length of up to 50 individuals of each species and calculated an index of biotic integrity (IBI) for each stream reach according to theprotocols established by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Overall, a total of 14 fish species were found; 542 individuals of 11 species in summer and 359 individuals of 14 species in winter. The most abundant species were creek chub Semotilis atromaculatus, bluehead chub Nocomis leptocephalus, and bluegill sunfish Lepomis macrochirus. The IBI for the both reaches of the unnamed tributary were “poor” and the IBI for Hunting Creek was “fair”.
