Backcountry use data is collected by the coastal rangers based on their visitor contacts and other information they receive regarding visitor use (the rangers sometimes receive radio reports from charter operators, or reports from other groups). This dataset is not comprehensive, but does probably account for a majority of the use. The accuracy of the data is dependent on the efforts of the rangers in collecting data. These contacts include the visitors to the public use cabins, which the rangers try to check regularly. The data for Aialik Bay is the most comprehensive, with data for Northwestern Fjord being less complete due to fewer patrols in that area. The Nuka Bay district is much different from the Aialik district in terms of types of use, and ranger coverage in that district has not been consistent in recent years, with no ranger team there in 1996 and 1999-2003.
