Excerpt from abstract: "This study investigates the effect large wood has on the creation of salmonid habitat, specifically the occurrence and variance of complexity in pools at the reach and individual pool scale. [Draft: 'Overall, the study shows that large wood is associated with greater variation and irregularity in stream channels in a variety of capacities.'] Greater large wood loading was associated with decreased individual pool lengths, maximum pool depth, and longitudinal residual pool areas. Large wood was also associated with increased reach percent channel in pools, pool frequency, and two-dimensional reach rugosity. Bedrock and large wood pools were compared at the individual pool scale with bedrock pools having greater pool lengths, maximum depths, and longitudinal residual pool areas. It was determined that there is no difference in pool edge rugosity, while bedrock pools were determined to have more complex bed topography." This study was located in Mill Creek near Crescent City and Prairie Creek in Redwood National and State Parks.
