From the Report: "Black cottonwood (Populus balsamifera trichocarpa) trees occur as components of riparian forests along many rivers in Olympic National Park. The distribution of cottonwood overlaps Roosevelt elk (Cervus elaphus roosevelti) range and concern has been expressed that elk herbivory has suppressed cottonwood recruitment along west-side rivers." Survey of cottonwood in riparian zone along North Fork Quinault River in what was classed as "winter range overpopulated during the late 1930s elk studies (Schwartz and Mitchell 1945).
