Valle understory fuels mapping project
Yool SR and Miller JD. 1999. Valle understory fuels mapping project. University of Arizona. Tucson, Arizona
A preliminary understory fuels map depicts the spatial distributions of understory fuel loads in four classes; grass, ponderosa pine, mixed conifer and aspen. The map was generated using GIS modeling techniques calibrated with global positioning system (GPS)-located sites from the Bandelier National Monument fire effects database, and the 1997 and 1998 Valle Project fuels data. Site data were averaged within regional overstory canopy type. National Fire Danger Rating System (NFRDS) slope classes, and aspect. Understory fuel loads range from 18.48 to 104.4 ton/acre in aspen and 3.45 to 6.33 tons/acre in grass. Data collected during the summer of 1999 will be used for accuracy assessment.
