Currently the National Park of American maintains an in-situ data logger in Vatia Bay. Temperature data is recorded every two hours and has been collected since 1999. A study with the intent to accurately monitor sea surface temperature (SST) on coral reefs around American Samoa and to fill temporal and spatial data gap of available in-situ measurements was conducted in 2004. A combined satellite and in-situ dataset of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Pathfinder data and the in-situ data logger was created and analyzed. The results of the study demonstrate the value of using AVHRR satellite data for long time monitoring of thermal stresses over coral reefs areas in American Samoa.
