The purpose of this study is to investigate reference conditions within which fire functioned as an ecosystem process at El Malpais National Monument prior to Euro-American settlement. The authors had four objectives. Comparing past fire histories in various habitats types across the landscape; to establish upper and lower limits within which fire functioned historically; to investigate changes in past fire regimes over time and space; and finally to suggest preliminary recommendations for managing fore that considers the complexity of the malpais landscape and the historical perspective of human land-use patterns.
