Introduction: Chaco Culture National Historical Park {CHCU), first designated as Chaco Canyon National Monument in 1907, was established in northwestern New Mexico to preserve the unique archaeological features located in Chaco Canyon. National Park Service policies also indicate that the 'Service will seek to perpetuate native plant life as part of natural ecosystems' (NPS 2001). Resource management personnel at the park have recently identified a need to evaluate the status of invasive, non-native (exotic) plant species within CHCU, therefore an effort is underway to understand the magnitude of the threat from invasive plant species (Brad Shattuck, personal communication). This pilot study will characterize the current state of invasive species outside the riparian corridor in the "bottomland" of Chaco Canyon.
