Adaptations used to defend against native predators may not be effective against introduced predators. Therefore, introduced species can affect the distribution and abundance of native prey organisms. Pools which contained crayfish also contained newts with injuries, but the newts in nearby streams without crayfish were uninjured. Crayfish were shown to repeatedly attack newts in the water driving them onto land.
