Fish Inventory of Cumberland Gap National Historic Park

This report summarizes an inventory of fish species and evaluation of fish habitat conducted in 2004 at Cumberland Gap National Historic Park. Fish surveys were conducted on reaches located on warm-water and cold-water streams within the park. Four warm-water stream reaches and two cold-water stream reaches were sampled in conjunction with a wetland and a subterranean stream which represented specialized habitat. A total of 1410 meters of stream length were sampled within the park. 1946 individuals representing 22 species were collected during this study. Observed species included nine minnows, six sunfish, four darters, two suckers, and one sculpin. Minnows were the most abundant group of fishes encountered during this survey, comprising 66 percent of the total number of individuals. The cold-water and subterranean streams were found to be almost entirely fishless during our survey.
