Bearss EC. 1983. Historic Structure Report, Ft Pickens, Historical Data Section, 1821 - 1895: Gulf Islands National Seashore, Florida/Mississippi. National Park Service - Historic Preservation Division. Denver
The preface of the book states that it is a detail of the structural history of Ft. Pickens from 1829 to 1897, the year that construction commenced on Battery Pensacola. The book includes a thorough history of the personalities involved with Ft. Pickens; however, referenced engineering drawings are retained on file with the Florida Unit of Gulf Islands National Seashore. The book contains 15 chapters that discuss general data pertaining to the fort; the Andrew Jackson era; the logistics, engineering, and building of the fort; and Congressional funding and legislative acts. Four appendices contain: (1) a glossary of terms; (2) General Simon Bernard's estimate of construction costs; (3) Captain William H. Chase's estimate of needed operation funds; and (4) Major Tower's armament report.
