Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae in Jojoba and Mariola

Twenty-five plants of jojoba and mariola were collected in July, 1978 from native stands in the Tucson Muntains west of Tucson, Arizona, along with 1 kg of sandy soil surrounding roots of each plant. Roots were chopped into 2-cm segments and cleared of tannins in 1 n KOH in the autoclave for 10 min. Fifty segments of roots from each plant were mounted in clear lactophenol on microscope slides. Vesicles in roots were measured by means of a calibrated ocular micrometer and photographed on a Leitz Ortholux ll microscope.
