The objectives and principles of sampling vegetation are discussed, and a canopy-coverage tehcnique is described. Forty plots, each 20 x 50 cm, are spaced systematically along a tape, and the coverage, interpreted as a vertical projection of a polygon drawn about the undisturbed canopy, is estimated separtely for each taxon in each plot. Coverage classes recorded in the field are: 0-5, 5-25, 25-50, 50-75, 75-95, and 95-100 per cent. In subsequent claculations of average coverage for the series of plots the midpoint of each class is used. This method is applicable to a wide variety of vegetation types so long as the plants are not much more than one meter tall.
