Various functions of the biosphere reserve are illustrated here. Great Smoky Mountains National Park in TN and North Carolina is an example fo the temperate broadleaf forest. Arizona's Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is another example of one the world's major ecosystems--the warm desert. Conserving the gene pools of rare and endangered plant and animal species is a focus of MAB's efforts. A last stronghold of the endangered mountain gorilla is Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park.
