Height and Volume Characteristics of Idria columnaris Kellogg

Idria populations for four areas, three in Baja California and one in Sonora, Mexico, were shown to have distinct maximum height characterisics. One of these populations, the one presumably characterized by the best growing conditions, had a significantly greater stem volume than the other three. Plants with two, rather than one, main stem were found to have essentially the same height and volume for each stem as single-stem plants from the same population. Thus, the combined height as well as the combined volume of the two stems wee roughly twice these kinds of measurements on the single-stem which Idria grows. At the Sonoran location the rate of taper of plants ranging from .5 to 3.5 tall decreased with an increase in height; there were no significant differences in this characteristic between any of the four sites sampled.
