This is an account in a series of detailed observations on the process of nesting and egg-laying by a captive desert tortoise, Gopherus agassizi Cooper. This female was caught on April 12, 1960, near Kramer, approximately 32 miles west of Barstow, California. She was taken to the home of Hector H. Lee in Chico, California, where she became one of seven tortoises of this species having free run of nearly 1,800 square feet of lawn, flower gardens and shrubbery in the yard. The yard also contained a burrow, which was used for shelter at night and during the heat of the day. Five of the seven tortoises had been in the yard for over a year prior to April, 1960.
