The 15 chapters presented in this volume cover a large proportion of the recent research on the biology of fishes in the deserts of North America. The information was compiled to synthesize some of the more extensively studied disciplines within fish biology and evaluate the state of knowledge. Chapter subjects include desert adaptations, coevolution of deserts and pupfishes, systematics of Great Basin Trout, effects of habitat size on species richness and adult body sizes, the role of competition, genetic differentiation, reproduction, thermal tolerance, and the habitats of desert fishes. Because of their preponderance in desert fish faunas and the diversity of their ecological and physiological adaptations, the pupfish (Cyprinodon) have been studied intensively and many of the chapters present the results of studies of pupfish.
