BHP-Utah International (UII) proposes to develop the Alton Coal Project located southwest of Bryce Canyon. Coal will be recovered through surface mining techniques. The National Park Service, as manager of Bryce Canyon National Park, expressed concern that the effects of lighting at the Alton Coal Project might affect visitor enjoyment of the night sky (i.e. stars, constellations, etc) at Bryce Canyon National Park. In order to estimate the possible effects, Systems Applications Inc. was retained by the National Park Service and BHP-Utah International to study the potential effects of night lighting from the proposed coal project on Bryce Canyon National Park. In this study night sky glow resulting from nighttime operation of the proposed mine was calculated, and the potential for human perception of these effects was estimated.
