Data collected to date provide some important information of the population numbers, movements, and disease status of the bighorn sheep within the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge and the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range. Population sizes are a vital element in determining proper harvest levels. Good population estimates will allow managers to direct hunters to areas of high densities, facilitating ram harvest from the healthiest populations. Planners and managers need population numbers to identify areas where bighorn sheep numbers are high and areas where man-caused intrusion such as new target facilities can be developed without impact to high value bighorn ranges. Movement studies to date show that large intermountain movements are not common in these bighorn populations. Disease studies indicate that disease is not a major factor in the bighorn sheep in the Cabeza/Goldwater bighorn populations.
