Manual and process to identify, evaluate, register, and manage sigificant rural historic landscapes in the National Park System. Rural landscapes exist within the National Park Service framework for interpreting and managing all cultural landscape resources within the parks. These resources may be historic sites, historic scenes, or historic landscapes. The rural landscapes considered here are places that have been settled, controlled, manipulated, or altered for many generations. The document provides guidance and process to help park managers identify, evaluate, register, and manage significant rural landscapes in the National Park System. In addition to specific techniques, this manual also presents a new way to percieve landscape resources. The document addresses the possibility of maintaining the character of a landscape, rather than preserving it entirely in a strictly historic framework. It is necessary to evaluate the significance and integrity of a district to acknowlege existing resources and changes over time. This assessment is used to develop management options that may preserve components of the landscape and maintain the essential historic character of the district.
