Monitoring the ecosystem and its impact on Honey Bee reproduction: A valuable tool for National Parks.
Thoenes SC, Buchmann SL, Schmidt JO. 1992. Monitoring the ecosystem and its impact on Honey Bee reproduction: A valuable tool for National Parks.. USDA. Tucson, AZ
This paper explains how honey bees can be used as effective monitors of ecosystems, how the ecosystem affects honey bee reproduction, and how honey bee swarms can be monitored with trps leading to possible future control methods. Two systems of monitoring an ecosystem utilizing honey bees are presented. The first involves honey bee colonies equipped with pollen traps that are placed on scales in natural areas. Analysis of the pollen samples yields quality estimates and species diversity indices. The second system utilizes swarm traps to monitor periods of swarm movement and numbers of swarms. This information provides an essential data base in which changes in the bee population can be recognized and investigated.
