The waterbird and shorebird surveys of te Kona coast focused on six sites in the north Kona district on Hawaii Island. The sites were: four wetland sites (Aimakapa Pond (in KAHO), Kaloko Pond (in KAHO), Opaeula Pond, and Kukio fishponds), one coastal reef site (Honokohau reef, in KAHO) and one artificial habitat (Kealakehe Wastewater Treatment Plant). Surveys consisted of observation using binoculars and spotting scope to document species abundance and diversity, band identification of Hawaiian stilts (Himantopus mexicanus knudseni) and nesting activity (i.e. number of eggs, number of hatchlings, number of fledglings) for endangered Hawaiian stilts and Hawaiian coots (Fulica alai). A summary of Hawaiian stilt nesting in 2005 at the six study sites is as follows: 12 nests, 36 eggs (estimated), 8 hatchlings, and 5 fledglings. Hawaiian coot nesting attempts occurred only at Opaeula Pond with a total of one nest, unknown number of eggs, two hatchlings, and two fledglings.
