The surveys of the Kona coast focused on six sites. These included four wetland sites (Aimakapa Pond (in KAHO), Kaloko Pond (in KAHO), Opaeula Pond and Kukio fishponds), one coastal reef site (Honokohau reef, in KAHO), and one artficial habitat (Kealakehe Wastewater Treatment Plant). Data from Cyanotech Corporation aquaculture facility have been included in this report to provide a more complete data set for the Kona coast. Surveys consisted of observation using binoculars and spotting scope to document species abundance and diversity, band identification of Hawaiian stilts and nesting activity (i.e. numbers of eggs, hatchlings and fledglings) for the stilts and Hawaiian coots. Common species observed at all sites were stilts, sanderling, ruddy turnstone, wandering tattler, Pacific golden-plover, black-crowned night heron and Hawaiian coot.
